| The United States won the 18th International Match for the Curtis Cup, 13 to 5, at the San Francisco Golf Club in a fog- bound, chilly setting. The 8- point margin equaled that of the 1966 Match, and it brought the United States its 14th victory in 18 matches. Great Britain and Ireland won twice, and two matches ended in ties.
At the end of the first day's foursomes, the Teams were tied; both had won a match, while one match was halved. In the afternoon's singles, four of the six matches went to the 18th hole; the United States won four, halved one, and lost one. Mrs. Jane Bastanchury Booth, Miss Debbie Massey, Miss Bonnie Lauer, and Miss Beth Barry all won, while Miss Maureen Walker won for the British and Irish side. Miss Cynthia Hill and Miss Tegwen Perkins halved. At the end of the day's play, the United States was ahead, 6 points to 3. The next day the United States Team won two of the three foursomes to take an 8 to 4 lead, and in the afternoon's singles, the United States won five of six matches. Only Mary McKenna was able to win a point for Great Britain and Ireland. Mrs. Booth was the leading point- winner on either side, with two singles and two foursomes victories. In three Curtis Cup Matches Mrs. Booth won seven of a possible nine points. Mrs. Allison Choate was the non- playing Captain for the United States, while Mrs. I.C. Robertson, who played in five previous Matches was non- playing Captain for Great Britain and Ireland. |
