The British Isles Curtis Cup team made the best showing of any British amateur golf team to visit this country to that time, and the tenth match for the Cup resulted in a tie, 4 ½ to 4 ½, at the Brae Burn Country Club, West Newton, Mass. Under the terms of the Match, the holder retains the Cup in case of a tie, so it remained in Britain. The British took a 2- 1 lead in the foursomes, but the Americans came back strongly in the singles, following the example of their Champion, Miss JoAnne Gunderson, who defeated the British Champion, Mrs. George Valentine, 2 up.

With two matches coming to the home hole, the United States actually was in the lead, 4- 3. However, Miss Barbara McIntire, who seemingly had had her match with Mrs. Angela Ward Bonallack in hand, had to come from nowhere on the last hole to gain a half for the United States; and, as it had two years earlier, the decision then rode on the contest between Miss Polly Riley and Mrs. Frances Stephens Smith. Mrs. Smith managed to bring a 1 up lead to the final hole and won it also for Britain to create the tie. Both captains used the same six players in foursomes and singles.
