Founded in 1884, is a magnificent traditional links of charm and elegance situated close by the shoreline of the Irish sea, near Southport.

Formby has always regarded itself as a top amateur course and with the exception of being used as a final qualifying course for the Open Championship on three occasions (1924, 1971 and 1996) it is not used for any professional tournaments.

The British Amateur Championship has been held on three occasions:
  • 1957 - R Reid Jack (Dullatur) beating Sgt H Ridgley (USA) in the final 2&1
  • 1967 - R B Dixon (USA) beating R Cerrudo (USA) in the final 2&1
  • 1984 - J-M Olazabal (Spain) beating C Montgomerie (Ilkley) in the final 5&4
The R & A has brought many other Championships to Formby - 5 Boys Amateur Championships, 4 Boys International matches and 3 British Seniors Open Amateur Championships.

The English Golf Union have held five English Amateurs (1934,1949,1959,1973,1991), three Brabazon Trophy's (1951,1965,1998), one Carris Trophy (2000) and the English County Finals five times (1926,1934,1949,1955,1979).

Other Championships include 6 Lancashire County Championships, 9 Lancashire Ladies and 7 Oxford versus Cambridge Varsity Matches.

The Ladies Golf Union, The English Ladies Golf Association and the European Golf Association all recognize Formby as a major ladies venue. The British Open Amateur and Stroke Play, the English Close and English County Finals have all been held at Formby. Formby was also the venue for the first Ladies' International European Amateur Championship held in the UK and in 2000 Formby was used as the final qualifying venue for the Ladies British Open held at Royal Birkdale.
