Great Britain and Ireland won its second consecutive Curtis
Cup Match, defeating the United States, 11- 7, at Royal St.
George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England. It marked the first
time the British and Irish had won consecutive matches in
the 57- year- old series. The United States has won 19 matches
to four for Great Britain and Ireland. Two matched have been
halved. As it had in 1986, Great Britain and Ireland led after
the first day's foursomes and were not challenged thereafter.
The British and Irish won two matches and halved a third
to lead 2 ½ - ½. Linda Bayman and Julie Wade downed Tracy
Kerdyk and Kathleen Scrivner, 2 and 1; and Susan Shapcott
and Karen Davies defeated Cindy Scholefield and Carol Semple
Thompson, 5 and 4. Leslie Shannon and Caroline Keggi earned
the first half for the United States in their match against
Jill Thornhill and Vicki Thomas.
The Great Britain and Ireland team extended its lead to
6- 3 in the afternoon as Wade, Thomas and Shirley Lawson won
their matches. Thompson scored the first victory for the Americans,
1 up over Shapcott; Pearl Sinn defeated Davies, 4 and 3.
The United States posted its only foursomes victory on the
second morning when Kerdyk and Scrivner defeated Bayman and
Wade, 1- up. Great Britain/ Ireland won the other two morning
matches to stretch its lead to 8- 4. Three singles wins on
the final afternoon were enough to clinch the victory for
Great Britain and Ireland. Shapcott downed Keggi, 3 and 2;
Bayman edged Sinn, 1 up; and Thomas defeated Pat Cornett,
5 and 3. Kerdyk, Scrivner and Thompson earned victories for
the United States. Thomas won three matches and halved one
for Great Britain and Ireland; Shapcott won three and lost
one. Kerdyk led the United States, earning 2 ½ points; Scrivner
and Thompson won two points for the United States.
