| The United States defeated Great
Britain and Ireland, 9 ½ - 8 ½, at the Honourable Company of
Edinburgh Golfers, Muirfield, Scotland. The victory was the
13th straight for the United States and its 19th victory in
the 23- match series. The competition was as close as the score;
only a missed four- foot putt on the final green on the final
day by Penny Grice kept Great Britain and Ireland from a 9-
9 tie. Ironically, the first victory for Great Britain and Ireland
came at Muirfield, in 1952.
The United States led, 5-4, the first day with 1 ½ points
in the three foursomes matches and 3 ½ in the six singles.
The teams were still one point apart after the foursomes matches
the second day, and the outcome wasn't settled until the final
hole of the fourth singles match of the afternoon, between
Penny Grice, for great Britain and Ireland, and Dana Howe,
of the United States. Miss Grice had a 12- foot putt for a
birdie on the 17th hole. Had she made the putt she would have
evened the match. She missed, though, and Miss Howe earned
a half by holing an 11- foot putt for a par and remained 1
up. With another chance to pull even on 19, Miss Grice missed
from four feet, and Miss Howe won, 1 up, giving the United
States the victory.
Miss Phyllis (Tish) Preuss served as Captain of the Unite
States team. Mrs. Diane Bailey was Captain for Great Britain
and Ireland.
