| A vastly more experienced United
States team scored a decisive 13- 5 victory over the British
Isles team at the Virginia Hot Springs Golf and Tennis Club,
Hot Springs, Va. Strong finishes by the teams of Miss Phyllis
Preuss and Miss Jean Ashley, and that of Mrs. Anne Quast Welts
and Mrs. Barbara McIntire helped the United States to a 2 ½-
½ lead at the end of the morning foursomes on opening day. Only
Miss Ita Burke was able to win a singles match for the British
in the afternoon, although Miss Susan Armitage won a half.
At the end of the first day the United States was ahead,
7- 2. On the second day the British Isles Team was able to
win only two matches. Miss Burke teamed with Miss Elizabeth
Chadwick to win a foursomes match from Mrs. Welts and Miss
McIntire, and Mrs. Angela Ward Bonallack defeated Miss Ashley
in singles. All the Americans had been in Curtis Cup play
before: only three of the British had been. The non- playing
captains were Mrs. S.M. Bolton for the British Isles and Mrs.
Mark A. Porter for the United States.
