| With first-time players accounting
for 6 ½ points, the United States Team scored a 10 ½- 7 ½ victory
at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, Porthcawl, South Wales. The
competition was extremely close throughout. After the morning
foursomes on the first day, the British led 2-1. The United
States drew even at 4 ½ each by winning three and halving one
of the afternoon singles matches.
On the final day, the foursomes were divided, and after
the first three singles matches each team had 7 ½ points.
The United States rookies, Misses Peggy Conley, Barbara Fay
White, and Carol Sorenson, provided the winning points in
the last three singles matches. Miss Conley, at 17 the youngest
player ever to compete for the United States in the Curtis
Cup Match, won both her singles; she did not compete in the
foursomes.
Miss JoAnne Gunderson, of the United States, and Mrs. Marley
Spearman, of the British Isles, played a memorable match on
the final afternoon; it was halved with each player scoring
71, two under par. The day before, Miss Gunderson was four
under par in her singles victory over Mrs. Angela Ward Bonallack.
The non- playing Captains were Mrs. Theodore W. Hawes for
the United States and Miss Elsie Corlett for the British Isles.
